Our History
Welcome to jazzmongolia.com... Jazz is a newly developing artform in Mongolia. Since 1990 and the fall of Socialism, Mongolians have been able to listen to, practice and begin to study Jazz music. This website celebrates this awakening of Mongolian Jazz, and details the musicians, the festivals, the organizations, the venues that bring this music to our country. Jazz has been developing in Mongolia since the time when the first jazz artist, an American representative of the Ford Motor Company, entertained at the Summer and Winter palaces for the Bogd Khan during his visits. Then in the mid-20th century, big-band swing was popular, filling the larger dance halls on weekend evenings. During the cold war, the little jazz music that came to Mongolia filtered in through the USSR, although most all Mongolian artists learning at music conservatories in Moscow and other major cities studied classical music. In Ulaanbaatar, aspiring young musicians occasionally caught bits of jazz from other places from outlets such as Voice of America. Eventually, for lack of access to recordings and written music, the bands disappeared and jazz faded into the background of the musical landscape. After the transition to democracy, Mongolians became freer to listen to and perform a wider variety of music, and influences are coming in from many more countries and musicians. Jazz is becoming increasingly popular and available in Ulaanbaatar: one can find jazz every weekend in clubs and restaurants such as Mealody restaurant and Le Bistro Francais. Please take the time to check out the many exciting things happening in 21st Century Mongolian Jazz... Jazz Mongolia Ulaanbaatar Mongolia |
